  • Wrote our MATTER & CHEMICAL CHANGE UNIT FINAL!
  • Way to go grade 9s!
  • Made sure we handed in the following things: 1) pg 175 #1-10, 2) pg 170 #1-7, 3) unit review booklet, 4) ionic & molecular compounds questions/answers (handout)
  • No homework over the break.
  • Reminder: You need to have 2 (two) current events done by the end of January.

  • Did some examples & definitions.
  • What is the definition of a chemical reactions?
  • What are reactants & products?
  • What 4 (FOUR) things do we look for to see if a chemical reaction has taken place?
  • What is a Catalyst? Remember the car vs walking....the end point is the same.
  • What is an Enzyme?
  • What other 3 factors affect the RATE (speed) of a chemical reaction? Think about the sugar & the food colouring.
  • You had questions #1-7 on page 170 to complete. These were due at the end of class or tomorrow. THEY WILL BE CHECKED.
  • You got a review booklet to complete. This is Due on Thursday.

  • Showed our "questions" about sections 1.0 & 2.0 to Ms. Wilson.
  • Worked in our journals. Answered the questions: Who was BOHR? What was his contribution ot science? Why does he get to sit in a seating plan with Rutherford?
  • Reviewed the general structure of an atom. What are all of the parts and where do they go?
  • Who was Nobel?
  • Reviewed how to work with the Periodic Table. You have a worksheet that should be nearly finished. Do you understand it? Complete it for tomorrow. Don't forget to add the NUMBER OF NEUTRONS column. Number of neutrons = Atomic Mass - Atomic number.

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Did some work in our journals. We talked about two main concepts & answered the following questions in our journals: 1) Rutherford - who is he? Describe his gold foil experiment (think about playing marbles). Why is it important? 2) Describe an atom. What does it look like? How are atoms & elements related? (think about humans as a group & individual humans)

  • Exchanged our journals & got feedback from a classmate. Did they write something different than you? Did you add to your journal entry?

The Blog has been MISSING! My apologies people, we should be back & fully operational/updated this week.

Here is a quick summary for the last few weeks, a more detailed summary will follow.

  • Vocabulary: YES you have it. I will post lists #10-12 soon. You should be caught up.
  • Matter & Chemical Change unit: We have finished sections 1.0 to 3.0.
  • You have written 2 TWO quizzes. How did you do? What can you do better?
  • Did you hand in your periodic groups project?
  • Did you get ALL of the notes that were given in class?
  • Have you handed in all of your assignments for this unit to Mr. Feller? You have until WEDNESDAY to get them all in. After that you are playing roulette. I will NOT mark any of this work, so please get it in to him. ASK him if you are missing any assignments, this is YOUR responsibility.......he does not have the time to chase you down.
  • Here are a few of the CONCEPTS you should understand about chemistry:
  • history of the atom
  • current accepted model of the atom
  • protons, neutrons, nucleus, electrons
  • how to read a periodic table: atomic number, atomic mass, figuring out numbers of protons, neutrons, electrons, ion charges, characteristics of elements
  • MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS: characteristics/properties, how to NAME them properly, how to write formulas properly.
  • IONIC COMPOUNDS: characteristics/properties, how to NAME them properly, how to write a formula properly how to BALANCE the CHARGE to ZERO.
  • If you do not understand any of the above concepts please ASK!

Parent-Student-Teacher interviews. It was great to see so many of you. I'm glad that we have some goals set for next term.

Remember this is about you, your learning, and your future.

Remember to REVIEW for at LEAST 10 minutes EVERY night. It will help make you a good independent learner!

Today in SCIENCE:

  • 9G & 9H went to world skills.
  • 9G & 9H meet in the back of the Library at 845 am for Riverwatch on THURSDAY MORNING. Make sure you have WATER.
  • 9A worked on their Biological diversity title pages & graphing using data from sia9 p13 & 14. You should have 3 graphs in total when you are done.
  • 9D did their lab safety quiz, started work on their Biological Diversity title pages, and wrote a journal entry about Riverwatch. Title page due FRIDAY.

Title pages are to be completed on the back of the rubric. Please follow the rubric. Remember you need at least 4 pictures, one that represents each section of the unit.
